The reach is the specification that matters

135 cm of horizontal span is enough to clear the back of a standard sofa and place the light above where someone actually sits. Shorter arcs end up hovering over the sofa back, which lights the wall instead of the page.

Measure from where the base will stand to the point you want lit before ordering. That distance, not the height, is what determines whether an arc lamp works in your room.

Why the base is marble

Not decoration — physics. A 135 cm cantilever puts significant leverage on the base, and a light base would tip. Solid marble gives the counterweight needed to hold that arc steady without bolting anything down.

It also means the footprint is small. The base occupies a fraction of the floor that a tripod does, which matters in a corner already holding furniture.

The half-dome shade

Directs light downward, in a defined pool rather than a wide ambient glow.

This is a reading and task light. Over an armchair it gives you a proper pool to read in; over a sectional it defines a corner. If you want soft ambient light for a whole room, a fabric drum or a diffused shade does that job better — this one is built to point light at something specific.

Before you order

Measure the reach, not just the height. Stand where the base will go and measure to the spot you want lit. If it's more than 135 cm, the lamp will not reach it.

Check the height above the seating. At 185 cm the shade clears a seated person comfortably, but confirm nothing above — a low ceiling fixture, a shelf, a pendant — occupies that space.

The marble base is heavy. Lift it rather than dragging it, particularly on tile or polished floors.
